Slot machines in most cases have reels which spin and spin many times then stops one at a time. The symbols on the reels always determines who wins and with what regularity. Each reel is covered with many symbols which may range from staplers, fire hydrants or tape recorder like.
Most reel machines have three reels and each slot machine reel contains 20 symbols and even if you are playing a slots game which will only display and pay for carrot symbols, there will still be 20 symbol positions on the slot machine reel. If carrots were the only symbol, than there might be 10 carrots on the first reel, 5 on the second reel and 1 on the third reel. When all this carrot symbols occupies these spaces, all other symbol positions will be occupied by empty spaces.

As years went by, the number increased to 22 which were to be the maximum number that could be put on a reel. Here the maximum combination was 10,648 which was still not a lot or a big jackpot if the machine was to offer smaller wins.
There is a virtual reel that can have 32 up to 256 or even virtual stops while a physical slot machine reel can have 22 symbols of stop on it. The virtual stops are assigned to one of the symbols on the physical reel. It is impossible to determine what odds are for hitting the jackpot if one doesn’t know the number of virtual stops that a machine has. The best example is that if the machine has 32 stops on each reel, the total combinations are 32,769. A machine with 50 symbols on each of the five reels would produce hundreds of millions combinations.12
